Boards and Burnout

This project evaluates how potential practices used to prepare for licensure examinations may contribute to burnout.

CONCEPT APPLICATION PRACTICE IN MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY

The objective of this project was to create a novel technique of active learning deliverable through classroom-oriented physiology instruction in an engaging, relevant and valuable way.

best practices in assessment

A culture of assessment is typically categorized by purpose: 1) to evaluate student performance against expectations, milestones and competencies for the purpose of advancement through a curriculum; and 2) providing student performance for the purposes of feedback, improvement and learning.

The former, summative style of assessment is offered in the spirit of “assessment of learning”, whereas the latter, formative style is provided in the spirit of “assessment for learning.” The purpose of this project is to lead the process by which both styles of assessment are integrated into an ongoing process rather than defining a series of independent events.

Furthermore, medical education curriculum that emphasizes training competent, practicing clinicians requires a shift in assessment culture to learning outcomes through competency-based assessment that prioritizes lifelong learning and active learner engagement. As such, this project addresses medical curricular, competency-based reform that has evolved over the past decade, enable the program to help students achieve their developmental goals, and address the transition to online, remotely delivered learning.

Ultimately, the outcomes of this project will address the complementary roles of summative and formative assessments, including the creation of assessment/programmatic goals, characteristics, outcomes, resources, timelines, implementation, responsible parties and continuous quality improvement framed in the context of Kirkpatrick’s model of programmatic assessment.
